I used to use Abel and Cole but similarly found their produce, quality, local sourcing credentials 'indifferent'. I find Riverford HUGELY better - particularly on season/local front - I even find myself using/liking previously hated veg! Though if you're after delivery day options or specific veg options a box scheme probably not for you anyway.

Thanks for all the comments.

Grethic: Lucky you having so much fresh produce to hand. Its a shame there doesn't seem to be a good easily accessible market near me and who'd trust something left by the road in East London. I am considering an allotment to grow my own though.

Graphic Foodie: I thought it was all UK seasonal until I looked more closely. That was a big disappointment to me. I hope they can improve on this and non seasonal stuff becomes an option not a standard in the box. Winter might be a bit grim on that basis mind you.

Kavey: Glad you like the post - i think its useful to see what everyone has said as there is some difference of opinion. l also hope A&C are taking on board what everyone is saying.

Mangocheeks: For some odd reason I find it a bit easier to be balanced about something that was free than something I paid for - no attachment to the purchase I guess. A&C do need to improve some things and for some of us seeing before we buy will always win out.

Dan: Wow you managed to read to the end - even I was worn out by then ;)

Linda,
I applaud and Thank you for your honesty.

So many people get freebies and think that they have to be nice about the product. You simply stated your honest opinion, which is really valued by many. I also love the fact that you highlighted seasonality, variety, quantity and labelling, something that a reputable organisation like A&C should be on the mark about, esp as it is known all over the UK, not just in the London area.

PS There is nothing wrong with being picky and choosey about what you like to eat and how.

Really good slant on this. Good to flag up the labelling. I stupidly assumed it was all seasonal or UK as that is what it says on the tin.

I thought mine was ok value but for me, I just like choosing my own veg and controlling what I want to cook and eat rather than what is left in a cardboard box.

Nice to see an honest balanced review. I have problems with the concept too but largely because I grow a lot of my own stuff and need to just top up with stuff I can't grow. I am also spoiled at having a market and lots of on the road veg stalls nearby. Life in the country has its plus side.
